If someone who enrolled you as a Recovery Contact asks for your help recovering their Bitkey wallet, here’s how you can assist.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: You must be enrolled and activated as a Recovery Contact to assist with recovery.
If the invite was never accepted or the wallet owner hasn’t activated you, you won’t be able to help.
Before you begin
Confirm you’re talking to the right person.
We recommend doing this over a live form of communication, like a phone or video call. Make sure it’s the person who added you as a Recovery Contact.
Open the Bitkey app
- If the app is already installed, open it
- If you don’t see the person you’re helping, reinstall the Bitkey app and restore your Recovery Contact access:
- Download the Bitkey app from your app store
- Open the app and tap More options > Be a Recovery Contact
- Make sure you’re signed into the same cloud account you used when you accepted the invitation
Once your access is restored, you’ll be taken to the Home screen.
Start the recovery process
- Locate the person who asked for your help:
- If you have your own Bitkey wallet (device + app):
Tap Settings > Recovery Contacts, then select their name
- If you have your own Bitkey wallet (device + app):
- If you’re only a Recovery Contact (no Bitkey device):
- Tap their name directly from the Home screen
- Tap Help with Recovery
Verify the request
- Select how the person contacted you (for example, phone call, video chat, or in person)
- If you select a less secure method (like text or email), you may see a warning. Continue only if you’re confident in the person’s identity.
- Confirm that you’ve verified their identity when prompted
Enter the recovery code
- Enter the recovery code exactly as provided by the person you’re helping
- Tap Continue
Once the code is confirmed, you’ll return to the Home screen. Your part in the recovery process is complete.
