UTXO consolidation allows you to combine unspent bitcoin (UTXOs) into a single output to reduce future transaction fees. Because this process involves technical trade-offs and network fee timing, it's located in the Advanced Settings section of the Bitkey app.
To consolidate your UTXOs:
- From the Bitkey app Home Screen, tap the
settings icon.
- Under Advanced, tap
UTXO Consolidation.
- If you have at least two UTXOs, Bitkey will allow you to continue.
- Bitkey cannot consolidate unconfirmed incoming transactions until they’ve been confirmed.
- If unconfirmed UTXOs are detected, you’ll be given the option to proceed without them or cancel and try again later.
- The maximum number of UTXOs that can be consolidated in a single transaction is 200. If you have more than 200, you’ll need to perform multiple consolidations.
- Review the transaction details:
- Consolidation time: Bitkey sets this to 60 minutes to minimize network fees.
- Number of UTXOs: Shows how many will be consolidated.
-
Consolidation cost: Based on the number of UTXOs and current network fees.
Bitkey does not charge or collect fees for transfers.
- Tap Consolidate UTXOs, then confirm using your hardware device.
-
Hold your Bitkey hardware device to your phone until you see a Success message.
- You may need to hold your device in place longer than usual — don’t remove it until the confirmation screen appears.
⚠️ Important: UTXO consolidation transactions will always require hardware confirmation, even if you're below your daily transfer limit.
- You may need to hold your device in place longer than usual — don’t remove it until the confirmation screen appears.
- Once confirmed, the transaction will appear on your Home Screen labeled UTXO Consolidation, with the cost displayed.
- If your transaction hasn’t confirmed due to network congestion, you may pay an additional fee to speed it up.
