An inheritance claim, once initiated, can be canceled at any time by either the beneficiary or the benefactor while the claim is being processed and is in a Claim pending state. Once the claim has been approved and moves to the Claim approved state, it can no longer be canceled. If you are a benefactor who would like to retain permanent control of your Bitkey funds and are unable to cancel an already approved claim, see The inheritance claim has been approved. How do I retain control of my funds?
IMPORTANT: Bitkey cannot cancel a claim on behalf of a beneficiary or benefactor, regardless of the situation. Once a claim has been canceled it can not be reinstated and a new claim will need to be initiated if necessary.
If you are a beneficiary
- From the Bitkey app Home Screen select
Settings
- Tap
Inheritance
- On the Benefactors tab, locate the name of the benefactor for which you would like to cancel the claim for.
- If you are unable to find the name of the benefactor that you initiated the claim for, then there is no current beneficiary / benefactor relationship, and no claim to cancel. If this doesn’t look right, see Why did the name of my beneficiary / benefactor disappear?
- Confirm the status is Claim pending.
- If the status is Active then there is no pending claim to be canceled.
- If the status is Claim approved then the claim is no longer cancelable. See How do I complete an inheritance claim after the six month waiting period and transfer the funds to my Bitkey wallet?
- Select Manage.
- Select Cancel inheritance claim and confirm using your hardware device
Warning: If you cancel your claim, it cannot be reinstated, and you will need to initiate a new claim.
Once the claim has been canceled, both you and your benefactor will receive a notification of the claim cancellation and your status as beneficiary will return to Active. If you no longer wish to be a beneficiary, see How do I stop being a beneficiary?
If you are a benefactor
As a benefactor, you will see a red banner titled Inheritance claim initiated on the Bitkey app Home Screen. Tap on this banner, select Decline claim and follow the on screen instructions. If your banner is titled Inheritance approved, see The inheritance claim has been approved. How do I retain control of my funds?
If that doesn’t work, or if you would like to learn more about the claim cancellation process, see below:
- From the Bitkey app Home Screen select
Settings
- Tap
Inheritance
- On the Beneficiaries tab, locate the name of the beneficiary that has initiated a claim for your wallet.
- If you are unable to find the beneficiary’s name that initiated the claim, then there is no current beneficiary / benefactor relationship, and no claim to cancel. If this doesn’t look right, see Why did the name of my beneficiary / benefactor disappear?
- Confirm the status is Claim pending.
-
- If the status is Active then there is no pending claim to be canceled.
- If the status is Claim approved then the claim is no longer cancelable.
- If there are funds in your wallet that you wish to retain control of, we recommend you take immediate action by following the steps outlined in The inheritance claim has been approved. How do I retain control of my funds?
- If there are no funds in your wallet, it means your beneficiary has already initiated the inheritance transfer. Once a transfer has been initiated, it cannot be canceled. Since your mobile key was shared with your beneficiary when the claim was approved to enable the transfer, your wallet is now considered compromised. If you are still alive and wish to continue using your Bitkey wallet, we strongly recommend creating a new wallet with a completely new set of keys. For instructions on setting up a new wallet, please see How do I set up a new Bitkey wallet if I already have an existing Bitkey wallet?
-
- Select Manage.
- Select Decline claim.
Warning: If you decline the claim, it cannot be reinstated, and your beneficiary will need to initiate a new inheritance claim.
Once the claim has been declined / canceled, both you and your beneficiary will receive notification of claim cancellation and your beneficiary’s status will return to Active. If you no longer wish for this person to be your beneficiary, see How do I add or remove a beneficiary?
