If you are new to Bitkey and want to set up your wallet for the first time see How do I download the Bitkey app to my phone? and How do I set up my Bitkey wallet?
If you suspect that your current Bitkey wallet has been compromised, or if you have willingly shared your mobile key with your beneficiary through the inheritance claim approval process, you should consider this wallet no longer secure and stop using it immediately. To protect yourself and your funds, we strongly recommend creating a new Bitkey wallet with a new set of keys.
WARNING: Creating a new Bitkey wallet will generate a completely new set of keys, with no connection to your current wallet or its keys. If you proceed with creating a new wallet, you will lose access to your current wallet, and any funds sent to addresses associated with your current wallet will be permanently inaccessible and unrecoverable.
To create a new Bitkey wallet:
- Clear ALL funds out of your Bitkey wallet. Only send funds to a wallet address you control, ensuring you retain full control of your bitcoin. See How do I send bitcoin? for instructions.
- Preserve any transaction history you would like to keep. You will no longer have access to the transaction history for this wallet once you create a new one. See How can I do an export from Bitkey?
- Wipe your Bitkey hardware device. See How do I wipe the Bitkey hardware device?
- Delete the Bitkey app from your mobile device and reinstall it.
- Set up a new Bitkey wallet: Launch the Bitkey app and select Set up a new wallet. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the setup.
- Transfer your funds to your new Bitkey wallet. See How do I receive bitcoin? for instructions.
- Update your wallet address: Now that you have created a new wallet with a completely new set of keys, it's crucial that you only use bitcoin addresses associated with this new keyset. If you previously shared your bitcoin address with anyone or used it for automatic transfers, update it immediately with a new address from your new wallet. Funds sent to an address associated with your previous wallet will not be accessible or recoverable.
