When an inheritance claim is initiated, a banner with inheritance claim information will be visible on the Bitkey app Home Screen along with the date the waiting period ends.
If this banner is not visible or if you are not sure what the status of your claim is, you can look it up by following the steps below:
If you are a beneficiary
- From the Bitkey app Home Screen select
Settings
- Tap
Inheritance
- On the Benefactors tab, there will be a blue banner that provides you with the following claim information:
- Inheritance claim pending - Funds available [date].
- Claim approved - Transfer funds now.
- If there is no blue banner on the Benefactors tab, then locate the name of your benefactor in the Benefactors tab.
- If you are unable to find the name of the benefactor that you initiated the claim for, then there is no current beneficiary / benefactor relationship and no open claim. If this doesn’t look right, see Why did the name of my beneficiary / benefactor disappear?
- If the status is Active then there is no pending claim.
- If the status is Claim pending then the claim is currently processing.
- To cancel a pending claim, see How do I cancel an inheritance claim?
- If the status is Claim approved then the six month waiting period has completed and the claim has been approved. This status will remain until the beneficiary / benefactor relationship has been terminated. This relationship can only be terminated after you have initiated the inheritance funds transfer.
- To initiate the inheritance funds transfer, see How do I complete an inheritance claim after the six month waiting period and transfer the funds to my Bitkey wallet?
- After you have initiated the inheritance funds transfer, see How do I stop being a beneficiary?
If you are a benefactor
- From the Bitkey app Home Screen select
Settings
- Tap
Inheritance
- On the Beneficiaries tab, there will be a red banner
- Inheritance claim initiated - Decline claim by [date] to retain control of your funds.
- Inheritance approved - To retrain control of your funds, transfer them to a new wallet.
- If there is no red banner on the Beneficiaries tab, then locate the name of your beneficiary in the Benefactors tab.
- If you are unable to find the name of the beneficiary that initiated the claim for your wallet, then there is no current beneficiary / benefactor relationship and no open claim. If this doesn’t look right, see Why did the name of my beneficiary / benefactor disappear?
- If the status is Active then there is no pending claim.
- If the status is Claim pending then the claim is currently processing.
- To cancel a pending claim, see How do I cancel an inheritance claim?
- If the status is Claim approved then the six-month waiting period has ended, and your claim has been approved. Your mobile key has been shared with your beneficiary’s wallet, to enable the transfer of funds from your wallet to theirs.
- If there are funds in your wallet that you wish to retain control of, we recommend you take immediate action by following the steps outlined in The inheritance claim has been approved. How do I retain control of my funds?
- If there are no funds in your wallet, it means your beneficiary has already initiated the inheritance funds transfer. Once a transfer has been initiated, it cannot be canceled. Since your mobile key was shared with your beneficiary when the claim was approved, we strongly recommend creating a new wallet where none of your keys have been shared.
